How would you react today about flying-with-children?. With lengthy delays and unexpected diversions it’s almost impossible to get through an airport, dragging children, in an orderly manner.

May Flowers has developed some essential survival strategies. This in an attempt to keep everyone sane. Here are her tips and tricks.

Plan Ahead when you're Flying-With-Children

Always try to book a non-stop flight. Coming from the West Coast, a late night or the red-eye flight would be best. The kids should sleep through the entire flight.

Catching the earliest flight will help you dodge the delays that happen later in the day. You can also save time by checking in online and reserving your seat before you leave home.

When traveling with children get to the airport extra early. Both you and the kids will have extra time to use the restroom and get through security. You can usually board early if you request it.

Flying-with-children presents another problem. Some airplanes are very cold. Layering is important. You can always remove things that you don’t need. Even if you’re going to the Caribbean this is a good idea.

Pack an extra T-shirt in case of spills and socks to keep the babies feet nice and warm. If you are bringing an infant don’t forget a little hat.

In Flight Essentials

You will need to occupy the kids once you’re on board. Try to bring everything you think you will need. Think about this as a camping trip. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. You will need to bring cash; plastic won’t work most of the time.

A DVD player is a good thing to bring. Make sure you bring headsets; you don’t want to disturb your fellow travelers. Bring a splitter so 2 can watch at the same time.

Some toys are a good idea when traveling with children. However, stay away from markers and crayons. The older kids will enjoy a new game for their Game Boy or Nintendo handhelds.

When you get by security you can buy some bottled water. If you bring a baby or toddler, you’re allowed to bring milk, formula, and baby food through security.

Navigating the Airport

If you are the only adult traveling with more than on child, you should bring a double stroller. Airport concourses are really long. You may not have much time between flights.

Although airlines allow children under 2 to sit in your lap, the safest way for kids who weigh less than 40 pounds is in a car seat.So bring your car seat if this applies to you.

It’s a good idea when traveling with children to pack carefully. Try to get all your carry-on stuff in a backpack. That will free up your hands while traveling through airports.

Always wear comfortable shoes. And most important, “Expect the Unexpected.
