The Old City Santo Domingo
Santo-Domingo-Dominican-RepublicSanto-Domingo-Dominican-Republic, conjures images of azure Caribbean water and beautiful Sandy Beaches that could surly tempt you into leaving your briefcase at the office. You might think that with all of Santo Domingo's history that it would read right from a textbook (and it could) but that’s a one-dimensional look at the oldest European City in the Americas.

Christopher and Bartholomew Columbus
It’s here that the history book comes alive and the many names we read about, like Christopher & Bartholomew Columbus, Hernado Cortés, and Sir Francis Drake actually walked the city streets; although, they would have known it by its former name Hispaniola.

Queen Isabel of Spain
Most of Santo-Domingo-Dominican-Republic's oldest sites are located within the Zona Colonial; where the entire place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (that should tell you something right there). Alcázar de Colón is the most visited within the area. Not only can it boast that it’s the America’s first castle, it’s also filled with an extensive collection of late medieval and Renaissance art and tapestries.

Knight in Museum
Forteleza Ozama is another castle structure, though more of a military style construction, for its purpose of protecting the area from seafaring invaders (pirates, arrgghh!). Those late medieval builders did such a good job that the Forteleza was used as a prison for years. It’s now one of the best area attractions. Also within the Zona Colonial is the National Museum of History & Geography. Only fitting to visit since Santo Domingo was considered the “Gateway to the Caribbean”, seems that it should have been named the Gateway to the New World, though.

The city also boasts the first Cathedral, the Cathedral Santa María La Menor (circa 1508) and where the remains of none other than infamous Christopher Columbus are reportedly buried.Don’t forget a visit to the ruins of the Monasterio de San Francisco, the National Palace, the Museum of Duarte, and the quiet serene beauty of the Dr. Rafael Ma. Moscoso, Botanical Gardens.

After a few days of visiting one of the most historical cities in the New World, you’ve certainly earned some time lounging on the island’s sandy beaches and frolicking in the crystal waters of the Caribbean.
