Tourism-In-Dominican-Republic

Tourism-in-Dominican-Republic has become a favorite of those who travel to the Caribbean. Tourism in the Dominican Republic grew tremendously in the 1970”s, 80”s, 90’s, and since the turn of the century the Island has become one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean.
Government started promoting tourism-in Dominican-Republic earnestly in 1971 with the passing of the Tourist Incentive Law (Law 153).
Law 153 created certain, ‘tourist poles’ to promote the industry’s growth, and more important, it provided investors in tourism a ten year tax holiday and an exemption from tariffs on imports not available locally.
The law also created a special arm of the central bank to co-finance new investments in the sector.
In 1979 the administration elevated the Dominican Republic ministry of Tourism to a cabinet level position, a further indication of official interest and commitment.

The Dominican Republic offers a number of attractions to tourists, not least among them, its bargain rates and liberal divorce laws. As a consequence the country has become the least expensive Caribbean resort.
The United States accounts for about 50% of the visitors. Other vacationers come mainly from Canada, Italy, Spain, West Germany, and the Scandinavian countries.
As the Island offered more “all-Inclusive” package vacations to visitors, the average expenditure and length of stay has increased.
Traditionally, the most popular resorts were located in La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Santo Domingo, however, since the turn of the century the beach resorts in, Punta Cana/Bavaro, are now the major attractions.
The countries return rate for visitors is very high these days. I believe this to be because of the All-Inclusive resorts and all the History the Island has to offer.
